I made this felted play-mat for a primary school, they wanted a 2 piece mat with different landscapes on it but connected together. I was keen to put as many geographical formations as possible for educational purposes.
The play-mat meant to introduce children to all forms of rocks and mountains we have on this beautiful planet, high mountain ranges just as old limestone-rocks and volcanos. In-between them our waters find their ways, staying as a pool, or run down to the seas.
Handmade wool-felt becomes indestructible once felted properly. The pure wool turns into this sturdy indestructible fabric. If it is not left in needle felted stage, it becomes strong and even water repellent.
Our rivers flows slowly to the sea with a delta, around sand-dunes and rocks and hopefully there are good enough waves there for surfing!
Instead of one big playscape we decided to divide it into two, as it will cover so many geological formations, and will be played with by many children at once.
These felted playscapes made with a wet-felting technique that has its origin back to long centuries, and still been practiced by many nations throughout north and west Asia, the result is a sturdy and durable fabric, which is kind of a magic, really.
The play-mat had been made with educative purposes. Shows the formations of our landscapes, origins of our rivers and mountains.
These wet-felted 3 dimensional wool landscapes are amazing, since it is so sturdy, it is water repellent, so it is a hard work to make it even dirty. They made for standing a lot of play! Plastic is not the only indestructible material! Here we are, the magical properties of the soft wool from our animal friends is just as good, and even better!
